Princesses and Glass Slippers
For my Daughter, Kezia

Princesses and glass slippers exists in my everyday.
The beauty associated with princesses is real for me when I look at you.
Glass slippers to show how fragile the path we walk can be.
Princesses and glass slippers brings fairytales for each day.

As a child we are told fables of “happy ever afters”; and the chance at which it comes.
We are told of princes falling in love with fair princesses in these tales.
We are led to believe that everything turns out fine, without any needed actions.
Such a fairytale my “Princesses and glass slippers”, may not be.

Like a fable, having you in my life is about the hope of everything turning out grand.
As the years goes by, my wish is for “happy ever after” to become true for you.
I see a prince on a horse coming for you; hoping it would rather be a Ferrari.
Only the very best accepted for those I love.

Though you are still young, these words here portray a life I wish you to have.
You may not understand all the words in this poem; later each of them will matter.
My girl, this life requires you to be tough, but a graceful spirit only comes from God.
Be kind to other people, for God dwell in their hearts as He dwells in yours.

I wish you to gain understanding at an early stage, so you may benefit from it.
People are gemstones; often gemstones in the rough.
It requires a person to look a little deeper to realise just how precious they are.
If you purely concentrate on the rough surface they show; you are the one robbed.

Each woman and man is someone’s child; someone loved deeply by a parent.
Be kind to all, so that people may be kind to you and those you love.
Love and kindness is an all giving thing; it expects nothing in return.
Life is not really about what you gain from it; but about what you can contribute.

So, princesses and glass slippers can exist in your life; if you treat others as treasure.
“Happy ever afters” is possible; if you seek out the real wealth in life, which is love.
Wake up with a smile in your heart; then work to place a smile in another’s.
You are my princess and your life as fragile as glass slippers; my love for you real.
